Resident research

At the Wayne State University Internal Medicine Program at Ascension Providence Hospital, we believe that all residents should participate in some form of scholarly activity during their residency. Our residents are highly productive researchers with many publications, abstracts, conference posters and presentations each year. We offer flexible options for pursuing quality improvement and patient safety (QIPS) as well as clinical research projects.

Quality Improvement projects

Group of 8 students on stairsAll residents participate in QIPS projects. Our goal is to introduce and train residents to utilize basic QI methods and improve the quality of patient care. Residents work in multidisciplinary teams that include staff from the APRH Dept. of Quality Control; the nursing program, the laboratory, and the hospital pharmacy; and the electronic medical records personnel and administration. Residents actively participate in a variety of hospital committees, whereby they can where they can discuss improvements and implement quality standards.

The IM-Ascension Program and the Office of Graduate Medical Education in the Wayne State University School of Medicine organize a yearly Quality Improvement Research Day (typically held in May) as a forum by which residents can showcase their QIPS projects and compete for awards. A regional medical education organization, the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education (SEMCME), holds both QIPS and  clinical research meetings each spring.

Residents also regularly present at the American College of Physicians - Michigan Chapter meetings. Notably, our residents have won Oral Presentation awards at ACP-Michigan and go on to present at the national ACP annual meeting. In addition, some of our residents have presented their research at international conferences, such the CHEST World Congress, NEJM 360 Resident QI Challenge, and the European Society of Cardiology.

We currently have 14 QIPS projects, with focus on both inpatient and outpatient quality and safety.
