City of Detroit

Detroit is a place filled with cultural and ethnic diversity. There is something for everyone in the Motor City. It is one of only seven cities in the United States that is home to a team in each of the four major professional sports:

  • Pistons Basketball Team
  • Tigers Baseball Team
  • Lions Football Team
  • Red Wings Hockey Team

In the past few years, Detroit was selected to host several major sporting events, including:

  • Super Bowl XL
  • 2006 NCAA Basketball Tournament
  • Major League Baseball's 2005 All-Star Game
  • 2004 Ryder Cup

Looking for culture?
The historic Detroit Cultural Center is located in Midtown, which includes The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Science Center, and the Museum of African American History. For the performing arts, there is the Detroit Opera House, Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Fox Theatre, all of which are located downtown. For a unique cultural experience, you can also visit Greektown or Mexicantown.

Throughout the city there are several wonderful restaurants, and downtown you can visit one of three major casinos. Detroit has recently undergone an extensive and successful renovation, including a $500 million development project along the Detroit river, and a network of parks. Campus Maritus, one of the newest developments in the center of the business district, is home to the Hard Rock Café, several other shops and restaurants, and an outdoor ice skating rink.

The state of Michigan is recognized as the Midwest's premier outdoor vacation destination with four recreational seasons, 99 state parks, and four national parks. There are more then 40 downhill ski resorts in the state, and numerous trails for snow-shoeing and snow-mobiling in the winter and hiking and biking in the summer. For those who like to golf, Michigan was ranked as the 12th best golf destination in the world and the eighth best in the country, with more than 1000 golf courses.
