Scott Hall, Detroit Receiving Hospital Internal Medicine Training Schedule - PGY-1
Application of the knowledge base acquired during medical school is the emphasis during the first year. This is accomplished through continuity experience with significant outpatient activity while emphasizing the inpatient training-site. The emergency medicine and cardiac care rotations provide in-depth exposure to acutely ill patients.

During each ward rotation, residents function as a team (two interns, one PGY-2 or one senior resident ) to care for their patients. The team approach is the foundation for all our medical services. Subspecialty fellows and attending staff are available 24 hours a day. Teaching and patient care attending rounds are conducted daily.

Internal Medicine Training Schedule - PGY-2
The major emphasis of the second year is on expansion of each resident's knowledge base. Significant time is spent on subspecialty rotations while changing the emphasis of the continuity experience from the inpatient to the outpatient environment.

Each rotation is a combination of outpatient clinic, consultation and in-patient care; the exact proportion of each component being based upon the specific curriculum. rotations include cardiac care, intensive care, gastroenterology, endocrinology, geriatrics, pulmonary, nephrology, hematology and oncology.

Internal Medicine Training Schedule - PGY-3
The emphasis during the last year is on consolidation of each resident's knowledge base. In addition to the continuity experience which emphasizes outpatient practice, senior residents assume the role of ward supervisor and teacher for medical students and first year residents. The senior resident is responsible to the ward attending for the organization of the medical wards and conduct of teaching rounds.

Consult rotations (general medicine, cardiology and emergency medicine) teach the resident to effectively advise other (frequently non-internist) colleagues regarding medical problems.
