Resident Research

Research Activities

The Wayne State Internal Medicine program considers research a cornerstone for quality improvement and sees this an opportunity for life long learning and practice improvement.

Specifically, every resident is required to do a Quality Improvement project. A significant portion of the Program routinely presents at American College of Physician Meetings. Among our residents and faculty, we have people with prior experiences in Basic sciences, Clinical Epidemiology and Clinical Informatics. The program holds a Quality Improvement Day once a year in coordination with Wayne State GME Office where CQI projects are presented.

While not mandatory, almost all our residents have had a poster accepted in either a state level or national conference.

Residents with an IRB approved project and after due process may request 4 weeks of protected time in Second Year for Research.

In the first year, Interns have 2 weeks of time to complete a clinical project---at the end of 2 weeks, having an abstract/poster ready for presentation is an expectation.

Briefly, you will find below some description of research activities in the program.

Clinical Quality Improvement Projects

Quality Improvement Day is held annually. Our resident team focusing on interdisciplinary Sepsis Quality Improvement won the "2012 Alliance Innovation Award".

Our goals have been to demonstrate that Resident Leaders can work in cohort of Quality Improvement personnel, Nursing staff, Electronic Medical Records personnel and navigate their projects through Hospital Committees leading to first, establishment of lacunae in delivering care and then implementing a quality standard.

The most recent quality improvement process championed by our Program is Proton Pump Inhibitor use in Hospitalized patients. Other projects of note include compliance with UPSTF guideline for AAA screening in clinic, Beta-blocker compliance in patients with history of MI.

Research Posters and Presentations

The Program is regularly present in all Michigan ACP meetings and other local meetings. Notably, the residents have been winning Oral Presentation awards at these meetings as well and going on to present at National ACP.

Over the last three years, the program has won such awards twice.

Publications

Among our residents are a few well published researchers who have gone on to publish during residency while working on their project. Letters to the Editor from Resident Authors have been published in high impact journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine.

An Annual Research report is generated and is available at the program office.
